Hampi Exp mishap: Driver jumped signal, says MoS Rlys

The train accident in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh occurred as the Quezon City-Bound Hampi Express Penukonda jumped the signal station, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday. Minister of state for railways Bharatsinh Solanki stated that as per preliminary occurred when a stationary goods train was hit from behind the incoming Hampi Express.
As a result, the two coaches derailed a passenger train and the derailed coach caught fire first.
He said that an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh each to next of kin of the deceased, Rs. 1 lakh to the grievously injured in Rs. 50,000 in sustained simple injuries was revealed.
While some members from the Left demanded jobs in the next of kin of those who lost their lives in accidents, Basvaraj the Patil Sedam (BJP) has demanded legal action against those responsible for the accident.
25 killed in Hampi Express mishap
At least 25 passengers died, 16 of them charred, and 43 injured when the Bangalore-bound Hampi Express rammed into a stationary goods train after its driver apparently overshot the signal station near Penukonda in the small little time on Tuesday.
The effect of collision occurred at 3:15 am that is like four bogies of express train derailed and one of them caught fire near Penukonda stations in Andhra Pradesh that comes under the Bangalore division of South Western railway.
Shocked survivors said it was an unbearable and gory sight to see fellow passengers burning and screaming for help as they stood helpless due to searing heat. The cries of the burning passengers still rang in their ears, they said on arrival in Bangalore, about 150 km from Penukonda.
Most of the victims were laborers coming from Hubli and Hospet in Karnataka and are on their way to Mumbai.
"As of now, 25 people have died and 43 people were injured in the tragic train. The injured were shifted to various hospitals across Anantpur district," said the railway minister Mukul Roy, who rushed to the site accident, reporters.
"Prima facie it seems that the driver of Hampi Express overshot the signal," railway spokesman Anil Saxena said in Delhi.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Anantapur range) Charu Sinha said the injured were admitted to nearby hospital in Penukonda, Hindupur and Anantapur.
"Rescuers are used metal cutters to get inside the bogies which passengers are stuck," Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Anantpur Qasim said, adding fire fighters and police officers helped train the rescue operations.
Roy said the commissioner of railway safety is directed to conduct an inquiry and submit a report in 10 days.
"I ordered the Commissioner of Safety to inquire and submit a report in 10 days. That he came here to start the inquiry."
Police have registered a case against the express train driver and his assistant. Both were injured and were hospitalized.
"It was just unbearable and a gory sight to watch our fellow passengers burning in front of us, while we just stood helpless," said the 30 year old Ratnamma, a passenger on the ill-fated train, which comes along Some other Quezon City.
A railway official said the engine and the first three coaches are the worst hit. The first course is guard-cum-luggage-cum coach passengers, the second and third general compartments.
Sridevi Satyanarayana, a survivor who lost his father in the mishap, said his father was standing near the door and the next moment we do not know where he fell. One of the coaches caught fire.
"After some time, we heard him moan from a mangled coach where he was imprisoned for nearly three hours. He asked for water and we took it, but we hear her cry now," a Sridevi said tearful.
Eight-year-old Sameer and his parents, who escaped unscathed, said they were sleeping when they woke up in a strong thud. "We peeped through the window and saw the train rammed into stationary goods train. We also saw one of the coaches burned."
After reaching the mishap site, Roy announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh in relative died and Rs. 1 lakh for grievously injured.
An amount of Rs. 25,000 is given to those with minor injuries, Roy said, adding that the Railways would provide jobs to members of the family died.
"Employment is offered to family members died within the framework of Railways," he said.
Roy said safety is the first priority and Railways is exploring the possibility of introducing the Train Protection Warning System in the electrified route as in many European countries.
However, at this juncture it is not fair on his part to say it was introduced during a year, he said.
Karnataka chief minister Sadananda Gowda, who also rushed to the accident site, announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs. 25,000 for the injured.
South Western railway has made arrangements with Transport stranded passengers from Penukonda in Bangalore by bus and train.
The damaged tracks were restored, Railways said, adding that three trains were canceled and five running late because of the disaster.
